About us

Three women sitting together smiling, casual warm colours
Musicians with cello and violins play for people dancing, pictured in movement

Violonelles unites four, sometimes three folk-curious souls, multi-lingual and multi-national and all living in the border triangle of Germany, France and Switzerland.

With a particular penchant for Celtic music from Brittany, Scotland and Ireland, their repertoire extends to Scandinavia and further afield.

These musical references span both traditional and modern tunes from a wide range of folk traditions, including the dance customs of bal folk and fest noz.

In their colourful modern presentation, Violonelles testifies to a living musical tradition that briefly revives mourning from centuries past, and brings joy to dancing feet.

Booking

We love to play cosy acoustic sofa concerts as well as for dancing (balfolk and fest noz), but we also do amplified concerts as a trio or (even better) as a quartet.

We are happy to give an introduction to the dances upon request.

Don't hesitate to contact us with booking requests, questions or ideas:
